Re: DA 10/08/18

Okay, I seem to have discovered how FAKIR works.

KIR is a wine cocktail and 'with nothing as garnish' equates to 'FA on top'. Fanny Adams, if you want the genteel version.

Finished this in reasonable time but had to go out. I hoped that the last answer, which I couldn't fathom, would now be clear. It isn't. Yet. ACROSS 1) CLOSE SHAVE : ddef : a simple starter which should've given a good launch point. 7) PEST : pe-------st 9) REVEAL : re-,veal 10) FORELIMB : (film,bor...

This puzzle wasn't very hard. It was probably more on the contemporary side of general knowledge than anything obscure. Only 1dn might be for the older folk. I have one I haven't quite parsed but maybe by the time I get to write it up . . . ACROSS 1) PISTACHIO : h(Cats)ip<,i,o : surface is a bit sca...

The sparsity of clues in the Downs hinted it could be a tough day. It didn't turn out to be so bad. The real estate theme was easy enough though one had to trust the answers were 'common' enough to get. ACROSS 4) LOB : -lob- : ie Globe 8) RESOURCE : -r-e- c-e- <> sour : not 'recourse' which made no ...

Re: INTERNET or INTERNOT?

I use the internet regularly to verify/find but usually after I've had a good crack at solving. But there's a certain comfort that comes from knowing that answers are found in a particular reference as well. My expectation would be that if the setter goes 'off-reference', being proper nouns or fresh...

Back in town so did the paper version today. It's funny how it seems easier that way. Still a bit jet-lagged so pleased that today's puzzle wasn't too taxing. There were a few clunky ones and a few DA usuals that people love or hate. ACROSS 1) SUSTAIN : sus-,(anti)* : 'septic' as anagrind doesn't qu...

I see there were no takers last week and none so far today. Apparently, according to DA Trippers, even they were less than thrilled by last week’s puzzle. Today, as I sit by the pool in Koh Samui, I’ve managed to get through the online version, so I’ll briefly explain. ACROSS 1,21dn) NOM DE GUERRE :...

I will be away for two weeks covering 6/7 and 13/7.
Someone please feel free to explain it all. I'll be interested to see another opinion.

I think I liked this one. It was a little closer to the style of Paul in The Guardian (but not consistently so) and his puzzles are always entertaining. In today's DA, there was some sensible surface, simple constructions and some amusing ideas. Also a couple of quibbles. ACROSS 1) EASY-PEASY : (yea...

While it was a nice, simple theme throughout the puzzle today, it did make for some not-so-simple and at times grating, solving. When the emphasis is to include the theme at all costs, one of those costs is fluidity. Everyone knows Sesame Street. ACROSS 1) FACT : F,ACT : F=false ? Not in Chambers, a...
