DA 19/10/18

A bit of ebb and flow today. Quick start in NE corner, then ebbed, then flowed in the centre, then ebbed in NW and finally got it done. There are a few problems for the purists today but also some nice ideas. ACROSS 1) MEDALLIONS : me(D--)al,lions 6,10) EPIC FAIL : (ice,a,flip)* : today's FOI. 9) HA...

DA 12/10/18

Bit late today. Had a commitment through the morning. Seeing the long answers I assumed there'd be some theme so I did all others first (bar one). Then the long answers just fell out and one had only to wonder how they worked. Overall, not that difficult. ACROSS 1) SUPREME : sup,reme---- : ie remedi...

DA 05/10/18

There's always a bit of trepidation in seeing a rubric before the clues. One had to look at 30-across and hope that it came quickly. It did. I think. I'm not sure how 30-across works exactly but it did seem to be ASEAN. From there it was just think of a country and find a clue that matched it. An ea...

DA 28/09/18

Bit delayed. Had to take my car in for service this morning. Did this puzzle while I waited in the nearby café. I had to confirm a few answers then stared at 1dn for a few minutes until something clicked and I was done. ACROSS 1) BACKWATER : ddef(?) : as Naïve is Evian (water) backwards. 6) THRIP : ...

DA 21/09/18

Not a particularly difficult solve today. For me it was made easier by doing it in the local café on a beautiful Sydney morning. There were a few cross-refs but nothing too upsetting. ACROSS 1) LIGHT RAIL : hm(lie, trail) 6) NAKED : -naked : ie snaked. 9) ZEBRA : Z------e,bra : hmm, 'runner' eh ? Mig...

Re: DA 14/09/18

A, I think 'country club' is a little tongue-in-cheek. Far from his biggest sin. And the Descartes needing a 'maybe', I sort of disagree. It's not a definition by example but rather a direct connection between the two. If I said Hawke, you'd immediately think Bob but there are many Bobs in the world...

DA 14/09/18

The theme was not that hard to uncover. I looked at 14dn, didn't get it. Did 28ac, easy. Then 25dn seemed very much like THUMB without THU. And so the theme became evident. It was straightforward until I had 2dn and 29ac (and 26dn) as my last ones to get. But I was set on 29ac being SUNDRY (run) so ...

Re: DA 20/07/18

I know. I just thought it an interesting trivium. Who knew that when they read/watched the stories ?

Re: DA 07/09/18

re 13ac, I meant for the 'strike' part of the answer. But now I see it was simply as 'going on strike', so no such explanation needed.

re 22ac, I agree but with DA's stuff, who can say for sure ?
