Re: DA 26/10/18

1 Why does DA persist in defining 'discover' as uncover or take the top from when it does not mean that? If he wishes to continue doing so he should always use a '?' to indicate something out of the ordinary is happening. 22 A dodgy definition. Ovaltine is more than malt extract. A clever idea. Like...

Re: DA 05/10/18

1a Foot (bottom, base) is better suited to a down clue.
7 Should have a '?' as it is similar in construction (word splitting) to 1a which has one.

Re: DA 21/09/18

Agreed it was pretty straightforward puzzle.
1d 'cute' is redundant'
12 problem with grammar; 'to calm' is a verb, 'staid' is an adjective. A better surface is to replace 'to' with a colon or a dash. Calm by itself is either a verb or an adjective, leaving an ambiguity to trap the unwary solver.

Re: DA 14/09/18

8 I agree re campus=university=U. I call it an indirect abbreviation. Other examples, not necessarily DA, are way=road=rd and way=street=st. 1d Should have a '?'. See 30 which does have one. 27 Still unsure as to how 'country club' = UN 1a Deserves a '?' as 'winger' is a very oblique reference to bu...

4 To describe a rubber's erasure as an assassination Is somewhat OTT even for DA. Assassinations are carried out by humans not inanimate objects.

Re: DA 10/08/18

7d Pathetic clue.

21 According to Chambers nothing, in the polite version, is 'sweet Fanny Adams' or 'sweet FA' not Fanny Adams by itself which slang for tinned mutton.

Re: DA 20/07/18

Three clues, 1a 3 and 20 require word splitting to achieve correct word play. The use of '?' does not justify such a procedure. DA should not be supported in such behaviour it only encourages others to copy him. 3 A stupid surface. 21 Can't agree that this is a good definition. Far too oblique in my...

6 Seven out of ten letters equals a finale? Do me a favour.

9 bout = b out = take b away = rubbish

16 Rasputin has been dead for over 100 years, hardly in a position to be influential anymore. Perhaps 'old influential' or one-time influential' would be better. Is there an editor in the house?

Re: DA 22/06/18

14 Is there a surface meaning?
17 'with final' = h. As Kermit loses its top(head) it is not a face-lift. As DA well knows the face is but the front part of the head not the entire head.
25 2 At Cape Canaveral one does a count down not a count.
