Re: DA 15/09/17

The long answer is Araucaria at his worst.

1a Perhaps pho = faux = phony a homonym run wild.

19 phoned as a homonym indicator is another travesty.

28 Ron Wood was an unknown legend to me. I'm more a Segovia, Williams, Romeros man myself.

21 Another homonym failure. Does DA have a hearing problem?

DH 12/09/2017

Can any one explain why the following 'gems' from yersterday's DH require question marks.

1a Korby and Pell cooked some meat? (4,5)

25 Moron? Tess? I upset Italian education reformer? (10)

30 Communist fire many bullets in paprika plant? (3,6)

Re: DA 01/09/17

I'd mark it at 5/10. Eleven anagrams is way too many. DA usually has no more than 4. He seems to have been talking with DH and DS who are masters at limited cluing.
25 I would query 'registered' as a homophone indicator.
8 The grammar is wrong; 'at' is ditched.

Re: DA 25/08/17

10 Broadway precinct = Glebe appeared in the Age. Is Glebe the only suburb of Sydney that has a Broadway. Far too localised a clue.
14 As ground-keeping as to be split for the clue to work, a question mark is in order.
20 Ditto with half-packed.
17 Factotum as in Figaro in The Barber of Seville.

Re: DA 18/08/17

12 An example of sloppy proof-reading all too frequent in today's papers.
6 As Timbuktu is a regional capital of Mali, is DA implying that Sydney or Melbourne = Australia. A half thought through idea.

Re: DA 11/08/17

9 I seem to remember a discussion some time back that words which are usually capitalized should always be treated so in clues. Hence lab = Labrador (dog) should be Lab. A little rewording, with 'Lab report perhaps' beginning the clue would solve the problem.

Re: DA 28/07/17

1a Chambers defines 'hi' as an interjection, q.v.

26 'Dib' in Chambers can refer to a child's game using small bones or stones, not really marble(s)

13 Agree with your comment re 'noisy' as a dubious homophone indicator

Re: DA 21/07/17

15 Shakespeare uses 'sans' several times at the end of the 'All the world's a stage' speech in As You Like it, but he was 400 years closer to the Norman-French invasion. Probably assimilated enough to not need further defining.
22 Answer is 'wetlands'

Re: DA 14/07/17

In addition to Zinzan's frustrations: 11 Deserves a question mark as cut back is to be read as two words. 16 The surface would make even less sense without 'for' 24 If DA can't hear the difference between where and wear he needs hearing aids. Look at the relevent entries in Chambers and, I daresay, ...

Re: DA 30/06/17

Some sloppy cluing 1a I doubt whether buckshot is found in a shell. 10 Amoco is not a fuel but an ex fuel company. There is a difference. 15 Top is better suited to a down clue. 19 Agree as to whether bread = cake. 4 Deserves a question mark at the very least. 20 To say that loosely = ca is a very l...
