DA 11/08/17

Post by zinzan » Fri Aug 11, 2017 10:06 am

A fairly inoffensive puzzle. Most clues require little explanation.
My rating . . . umm . . . well . . . 6/10.

ACROSS
1) DICTATOR : (adroit)*/ct
6) YODELS : yo(k/d)els
9) EMBARK : me<,bark : Probably the nicest clue today.
10) BLUDGEON : bludge,on : 'do little'
11) CROP CIRCLE : crop-circle
12) IPAD : ----i----,pad
13,20) FLIP-FLOP : ddef : Let's not allow 'thongs' to be pushed aside for 'flip-flops'. I mean, really, flip-flops sounds much sillier.
15) TINKERBELL : tinker,bell
17) PYROMANIAC : cryptic def
19) GOVE : govern -RN
22) COSA NOSTRA : rev hidden
24) STAR JUMP : star,jump
25) EDITOR : (-teroid-)*
26) CREDIT : (-e,-r,-d,-c,-i,-t)* : anagram of final letters
27) DOLITTLE : do little

DOWN
2) IMMORALLY : im-m,orally
3) TRAMP : tram,P : Vladimir from Godot. Flip-flop shop = mart/tram. Ugh.
4) TAKE INTO ACCOUNT : ddef : I would've thought deposit was 'put' rather than 'take'. A deposit may be accepted usually. Thoughts ?
5) RUBICON : rub,icon
6) YOU NEVER CAN TELL : (clue,only,veteran)*
7) DOGGIE BAG : do,(ggg,-a-i-b-e)*
8) L-DOPA : l(--d--)op,a
14) PROSPERED : (peers)*/prod : 'joined' push = go inside ? Let's say, sloppy cluing.
16) LIVERPOOL : liver,pool
18) INSIPID : in,(dip,is)<
21) LATER : reta-l<
23) SKINT : skin,t

9 I seem to remember a discussion some time back that words which are usually capitalized should always be treated so in clues. Hence lab = Labrador (dog) should be Lab. A little rewording, with 'Lab report perhaps' beginning the clue would solve the problem.

Interesting to compare DA's clue to "DOLITTLE" with the following from Times Club Monthly #20203 (Aug 1st 2017)

He talked with creatures I'd tell to get lost

Take your pick!
