DA 28/07/17

Post by zinzan » Fri Jul 28, 2017 9:58 am

No particular theme today. Just an average old DA puzzle that requires some forgiveness.
The more I tried to explain it here, the more it frustrated me. A lot of trust needed and clunk aplenty. I give it a 3.5/10

ACROSS
1) HIFALUTIN : hi,(anti-flu)* : Is 'welcoming' = 'hi' ? Is it a noun ?
6) VENUS : venues - e : Ridge/back = ----e
9) BARRA : barrage - ge : ' - gets semi-eliminated' could be either '-(minus) gets(less ts)' or 'ge/ts(semi) eliminated'. Dumb clue.
10) ERGONOMIC : (nice,groom)*
11) JAMES PATTERSON : jam,e(spatters)on
14) ENOLA GAY : one<,lag,a,-----y : I've seen the plane in Washington - a bit unnerving. Certainly notorious.
15) BREECH : b-------r,hm(each)
17) RATS ON : no star <
19) PATHOGEN : path,ego<,n
22) FINGER SPINNERS : ddef : Bowlers in cricket for sure but I thought the toys were 'fidget spinners' - or maybe some other ?
24) REPTILIAN : re,p((i,lit)<)an : Took some staring to figure it out.
26) AD LIB : a,d(-----l)ib : I can't see anything that dib = marble directly. Marbles probably has copious jargon. Help ?
27) ARGON : Argo,-----n : Screen 6 . . . ugh.
28) GRAVEYARD : grave,yard

DOWN
1) HOBO : -h,-o,-b,-o : second letters
2) FARRAGO : far,rag,o
3) LEAVES ALONE : le(ave,salon)e
4) THESPIAN : t,hes(s/p)ian
5) NEGATE : hm(any),-Gate
6) VAN : ddef
7) NAMASTE : (a man)<,s------t,--e--
8) SECOND HAND : ddef
12) EARTHENWARE : hidden
13) TERRA FIRMA : hm(terror),fir,ma : 'Noisy' doesn't do it for me as a homophone indicator.
16) HACIENDA : (nach-,idea)*
18) TENT PEG : ten,t-p-,eg
20) GORILLA : a(or,ill)g<
21) ASKING : as king
23) ABED : all vitamins
25) INN : (Ni--n)* : x and o being kiss and hug.

1a Chambers defines 'hi' as an interjection, q.v.

26 'Dib' in Chambers can refer to a child's game using small bones or stones, not really marble(s)

13 Agree with your comment re 'noisy' as a dubious homophone indicator
