DA 01/09/17

Post by zinzan » Fri Sep 01, 2017 10:09 am

I got a bit held up by the NW corner and a few other spots. It was a bit tricky today.
Judging by the number of times I wrote my proposed answer and then found how to place the secondary indicators, I'd say that newer DA solvers would find this hard. 23ac was an example of how someone fluent in DA might see what's coming but as for others, well . . .

ACROSS
1) CODPIECE : cod piece : possibly is a scale.
5) see 24dn
10) JINGLES : (m/j)ingles : one to stare at before the penny dropped.
11) O'KEEFFE : -oke-,-ef-,f---------e
12) NIELS BOHR : (nobler,his)*
13) DEREK : hm(derrick)
15) ORC : crow -w <
16,22dn) SEE WHAT I DID THERE : (the,weird,aside,the)*
17) IN A NUTSHELL : inane<>(shut)*,----ll----
18) MUM : ---m,um
19,16dn) MAGDA SZUBANSKI : mag,DA's,(nz/uk,bias)*
20) RED PLANET : hm(read),plan,ET : what does 'where' do beside a bit of surface ?
23) ARTISTE : (tra--iest)* : 'quiet boycott' = remove 'sh'
25) IN A DAZE : hm(inner,days) : 'registered' ? I guess it's okay.
26) SANK IN : san,kin : tempting to do another homophone
27) TERABYTE : hm(terror,bite) : 'blabbed' ? I guess it's okay.

DOWN
1) CAJUN : can<>ju--- : I think The Times had 'tinned' for 'inside can' recently, so 'preserved' isn't too much of a leap. Also, 'defrosted' = remove 'ice'.
2) DANIEL CRAIG : (can,a,girl,die)* : good anagram.
3) IDLES : 1d,Les : deceptive certainly. 'claims' ? mmm . . .
4) CUSTOMER SURVEY : (source, must, very)* : struggled with 'server' as second word and understandably so. It isn't.
6) ANECDOTAL : (a,lane)*<>(CD,OT) : don't like 'skip' as anagind.
7) OAF : f-a-o- <
8) SHEIKHDOM : (hi-,h-d,smoke)*
9) FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE : hm(for,wield),rive
14) RUDIMENTARY : (a,turn)*<>dime,ry : <> is my new notation for 'outside' !
16) see 19ac
21) LIANA : hidden
22) see 16ac
24,5ac) TEN CANOES : (Cantonese)* : Indigenous movie

Overall, I sort of liked today's puzzle because it wasn't too weird and took some doing.
7/10.

I'd mark it at 5/10. Eleven anagrams is way too many. DA usually has no more than 4. He seems to have been talking with DH and DS who are masters at limited cluing.
25 I would query 'registered' as a homophone indicator.
8 The grammar is wrong; 'at' is ditched.

I agree with Zinzan's assessment, but I'd only give it 5/10 because of some particularly ugly surfaces. DA needs to put a bit more time into polishing his clues.
