DA 29/09/17

Post by zinzan » Fri Sep 29, 2017 11:36 am

I was a bit late starting to do this. Then a very slow start coupled with a brain explosion made the whole solve hard work.
I'll see how I feel after trying to explain . . .

ACROSS
1) CHUFFED : ch,--uffed (stuffed minus st) : not thrilled.
5) see 15ac
9) OLD : -old : i.e. fold. 'Open' is now 'remove top of' ? I see the thought but it's pretty unnecessary. Not a good start so far.
10) LEAD BALLOON : lead,balloon
11,18) SCREAM BLUE MURDER : (mum, rebel, crusader)* : My brain explosion as I spent a long time fitting it as 18,11 so had M-R-E- S-R- A-B-U-. Looked Latin.
12) EPEE : ddef : go online = e-pee : some humour at least.
15,5) COCHLEAR IMPLANT : co,ch(Lear,imp,------l)ant : Awful, convoluted, laborious clue. I think <5 might be coming . . .
16) GRANTS : gran,t--s
18) see 11ac
19) FURUNCLE : fur,uncle
21) ALSO : initials
22) MUTE BUTTON : Sp(beaut/mutton)
25) AFFIRMATIVE : a,f(fir,mat)ive
27) ACT : ddef
28) NEW IDEA : ne(wide)a- : DA has to kick the use of 'fairly'. It's fairly ordinary. Or ordinar.
29) RETAKEN : (keen,art)*

DOWN
1) CROSS : ddef
2) UNDERSCORES : ddef
3) FELL ASLEEP : fellas,peel<
4) DEADBEAT : ddef presumably. I don't know what 'all in' means.
5) IMBRUE : -imb-,rue
6) PELT : pe(----l)t
7) AVO : ddef
8) TENNESSEE : hm(tenor), see : <4 maybe ?
13) PANIC ATTACK : pan,i,cat,tack
14) FRAUDULENT : (artful, nude)* : of course, 'forged' is a more likely anagind than 'in repose'. He might be after re-pose because repose doesn't do it.
15) COME AGAIN : ddef
17) SUPERIOR : please explain ! (Tell me it's not bug=ire flipped).
20) GUYANA : guy,-ana- : i.e. canal
23) NOT ON : not-on
24) TRAD : dart<
26) FEW : hm(phew)

Didn't like it. No cleverness. Lots of debatable clues. A real disappointment.

17d My explanation of the wordplay was: SUP, (IRE)* [yes, I'm afraid!], OR. Since IRE is a noun, agree that "bug"seems a poor synonym for it (cf. IRK, say).
