DA 03/11/17

Post by zinzan » Fri Nov 03, 2017 10:01 am

Today's puzzle was a bit average, not in a bad way but it just seemed inoffensive and a mixed bag of answers.

ACROSS
1) LOVEBITES : (to,evils,be)*
6,13) EMILY BRONTE : (by,lime)<,(or,ten)*
9) DELIGHT : D,e(L)ight : I guess we break 508 into five hundred . and . eight.
10) FATHOMS : fat,hom-s
11,23dn) HE WHO MUST NOT BE NAMED : hew,(the, dumb, mans, one,to)*
13) see 6ac
14) JOYOUSLY : J-----o(you)sly
17) OUTSWIMS : (sum,is,two)* : at least the definition was clever.
19) ECZEMA : -e,-c,-z,-e,-m,-a : always a good spelling bee word.
22) PINK SKY AT NIGHT : (thinking,past)*<>k : not sure where the Y comes from . . . error ?
25) IMMERSE : -immer,se----
26) ILLYRIA : -illy,air< : silly minus s . . . meh
27) NADAL : lad,an< : nice enough as Rafa has had injury time off before this year.
28) LUMINESCE : (clue)*<>mines : I think I'm a bit over the 'cryptic clue' anagram these days.

DOWN
1) LUDO : ----l,-udo
2) VOLDEMORT : vol(demo,r)t
3) BIG SHOT : ddef : looked interesting but slightly underwhelming.
4) TOTEMS : to,te-ms : terms minus r-----
5) SOFT SPOT : ddef : I reckon a two word clue should at least be a common phrase or totally misleads. This does neither.
6) EAT INTO : ea,tint,o : is orange=O ?
7,24) I DON'T CARE : (editor,can)*
8) YESTERYEAR : yes,t(-e-r-y)ear
12) ABSORPTION : abs,(p)or(p)tion
15) SHEPHERDS : cryptic def : the 'so-called use' is homophonic for 'ewes'.
16) EMPYREAL : emp-y,real
18) WASTREL : was,-lert<
20) CAITLIN : (inci---tal)*
21) ATRIUM : a,Tr(I)um-
23) see 11ac
24) see 7dn

Still unimpressed. 5/10.

22a Agree that the Y seems unclued in the wordplay.

2d VOLT is a unit of voltage, not current.
