DA 18/05/18

The NW corner was not a good place to start. I had to go SW for my first answers, then NE. They merged somewhat until all was revealed. One or two quibbles but mostly good.

ACROSS
1,26) COMPOS MENTIS : compos(men)t,is : a good start.
4) ARTISTRY : (strait)*,ry : 'tracks'=railway=ry
10) ROXY MUSIC : (your,six,c-m-)* : helps to be at least my age to know that Avalon was by Roxy Music. Quibble that the title was not italicised.
11) DACHA : d,a Cha- : the 'd' of Chad goes to open the answer.
12) SCRATCHING POLE : scratching,Pole : I was looking for a food. Nup.
14) LYRIC : --ly Ric----- : I hoped he was a member of 10ac but disappointingly not.
16) TEACHABLE : t(each)able : 'a pop'=each
17) TENTACLES : tent,---acles : manacles - man
19) TOXIC : --to--,--xi--,--c--
20) HEMINGWAYESQUE : he,Ming way,(seque-)* : good clue, amazing Scrabble play.
23) LIONS : oil<,NS : apparently an AFL team.
24) COCHINEAL : (a,nice,clo-h)* : singlet=single t . . . mmm
25) NED KELLY : crypdef : Nolan paintings had a very memorable Ned Kelly series.
26) see 1ac

DOWN
1) CHRYSOLITE : (ice, shortly)* : not the top of everybody's list of stones.
2) MIXER : ddef
3) OSMOTIC : O,smot-,ic- : i.e. smote,ice shortened
5) RECONNAISSANCE : Re(con)naissance
6) IN DEPTH : -ind,-ept,h
7) TACKLE BOX : tackle, box : another footy reference (keep 'em coming) where a tackle puts a player on the grass.
8) YUAN : y-u,an
9) ESCHATOLOGICAL : (alcoholic,stage)* : who knew that word ?
13) SEYCHELLES : hm(say,shells)
15) RANGE HOOD : range,hood
18) AT ISSUE : a tissue : a clue done many, many, many times.
19) THE WIRE : t(hew)ire
21) QUEST : que,s---t
22) GLEN : -g,(l--)-e,-n : bit convoluted but surface works okay.

A good mix of obscure and common references. Clues were technically good. No big issues. 7.5/10 (again).

22 AS 'laptop' is meant to be read as 'lap top' for the clue to work, a '?' would have been the right thing to do.
