DA 21/09/18

Post by zinzan » Fri Sep 21, 2018 10:40 am

Not a particularly difficult solve today. For me it was made easier by doing it in the local café on a beautiful Sydney morning.
There were a few cross-refs but nothing too upsetting.

ACROSS
1) LIGHT RAIL : hm(lie,trail)
6) NAKED : -naked : ie snaked.
9) ZEBRA : Z------e,bra : hmm, 'runner' eh ? Might be an African stander too. Is running it's distinct characteristic ?
10) DISBURSED : dis-,hm(burst)
11) REF : --ref-- : please don't call this an &lit, coz it ain't.
13) ENCAPSULATE : acne<,p(uls/sul)ate : took me while to parse this one, ---S moves within 'pulsate'.
14) THREAD : ddef
15) ISLANDER : (slid,near)*
19) ON THE AIR : -ont-,-hea-,-ir- : not bad.
20) IN GEAR : ddef : also not bad.
22,21dn) SLIDING DOOR MOMENT : (non, rigid, model.most)* : 'unpacked' ? Meh. Was it an expression before the movie ?
24) LAC : hm(lack)
25) TAKE A DIVE : ddef : also took a while to click. Diverted by thoughts of a free show but in fact what soccer/AFL players do for a 'free kick'.
26) VESPA : ----aps ev--- <
28) DITZY : -d-i-t,z--y : it seems it's not 'oddly' this week.
29) GO THROUGH : Goth, rough : golf 'links', that is. Is 'face' the same as 'go through' ? Isn't it one then the other ?

DOWN
1) LAZARETTO : laz-,a,otter< : a leprosy hospital I knew only from a Jack White album.
2) GOB : Gob- : about as easy as DA gets.
3) TRADENAME : (mane,dart)<,E
4) ADDICT : ACT <> (did)*
5) LAST POST : last,post
6) NAURU : an<,-uru
7) KISS-AND-TELL : (all,kinds,set)*
8) DODGE : ddef
12) FIRST-AID KIT : fir,staid,kit : also not bad. It reads well.
16) ARNO RIVER : ar(no)river : who has gone to Florence to see the Arno River ? Like saying you go to Melbourne to see the Yarra. Unlikely. Maybe a 'feature', if not an 'attraction'.
17) RORSCHACH : hm(raw,shack) : psychology blot tests.
18) RINGLING : ring,(g,nil)< : Ringling Brothers Circus.
21) see 22ac
22) SATED : satirised minus iris
23) ITALY : (ta--ily)* : one for the DA diehards only. Boot/laces. 'laces' the anagram indicator.
27) SOU : sou- : ie soul.

I have no real issue with this puzzle. It has a nice variety of answers and some nice clues with only a quibble or two.
7/10.

Agreed it was pretty straightforward puzzle.
1d 'cute' is redundant'
12 problem with grammar; 'to calm' is a verb, 'staid' is an adjective. A better surface is to replace 'to' with a colon or a dash. Calm by itself is either a verb or an adjective, leaving an ambiguity to trap the unwary solver.
