DA 26/10/18

Mmm, slippery little sucker, as some movie once said. (Pretty Woman, methinks).
My usual habit of solving as many non-theme clues as possible started off wonderfully. Got lots of them. That left me with 2dn, 13dn and 19dn where I knew the answer . . . but what to make of it ? . . . not much.
9ac had I----- with 'mad' so it seemed INSANE, 'as' was raging so seemed to need IN--NE too. Nine ? Hang on ! . . .
Yep, the clue numbers are part of the clue.

ACROSS
*4) RUFOUS : (FOUR,US)*
6) TIMOR SEA : t(i,Morse)a
*9) INSANE : (NINE,as)*
*10) COHERENT : co,her,(TEN)*
11) HAIR LACQUER : (l,richer,aqua)*
15) TRADE-IN : hm(tray,din)
17) ABSOLUT : -ab,so(-lu-)t
18) IPOD SHUFFLE : (off,pu-lished)*
22) OVALTINE : o,Val--tine : as in St Valentine's Day, not Valentino.
23) AGATES : a(:gate)s : -gate is newspeak for a scandal a la Watergate.
24) ENKINDLE : ---en kind le--
25) ANODES : an,ode's

DOWN
*1) FUNNEL : fun,-NE,l---
*2) BINOCULARS : bin(-ocular)s
*3) FOREARMS : hm(FOUR),arms
4) RAIN HATS : (than,sari)*
*5) FESTIVAL : (FIVE,salt)*
*7) SVEN : S-VEN : the other clue that gave the game away.
*8) AITS : hm(EIGHTS) : aits=islands=keys
12) CONJOINTLY : con,jo(in,t-l-)y : is 'cool' and 'in' really synonymous ? Maybe sometimes.
*13) ILL-FATED : I'll,fat,---e,--------d : a nice editorial comment from the setter.
14) ATHEISTS : at,heists
*16) EXISTENT : (SIXTEEN)*,----t
*19) URGENT : u---r,gent : never heard of the phrase.
*20) SORE : s-ore
*21) JACK : ddef : an offered Jack may conclude a 21 total in pontoon or blackjack.

There's certainly no doubt that DA can construct a clever grid. This is no exception. Fourteen themed clues using the number as the first word in the clue is a terrific achievement. None of them were controversial. Obviously had to use a few trade names to fill the grid but really very few.
Today's rating : insane/coherent.

1d The correct answer is TUNNEL, I think. "barrel = TUN (not FUN) and TUNNEL is a clear synonym of "shaft", unlike "funnel".
21d I had a different interpretation of the wordplay: "twenty-one" = BLACKJACK. "conclusion" => take latter part ie JACK.

I thought the idea that the clue number itself forms part of the clue wording for the asterisked clues to be very clever & that its execution led to an absorbing puzzle.

Yes, I did doubt 1d but forgot to investigate any further.

1 Why does DA persist in defining 'discover' as uncover or take the top from when it does not mean that? If he wishes to continue doing so he should always use a '?' to indicate something out of the ordinary is happening.
22 A dodgy definition. Ovaltine is more than malt extract.
A clever idea. Like Z, getting 7 was the clincher.
