DA 02/11/18

Post by zinzan » Fri Nov 02, 2018 1:10 pm

Did most of this before I was called away for the morning. Had only two little words to justify. Got back and of course they just seemed obvious when you've looked away for a while. There appeared to be no particular tricks in this puzzle and it wasn't too hard.

ACROSS
1) WISECRACK : hm(whys),crack : 'have a crack at something' . . .
6) BOHEA : bo-hea- : warped surface.
9) ORE : --ore : ie adore. One I had to revisit. Is 'fancy' and 'adore' really interchangeable ? They both imply some admiration but one much more so than the other.
10) MRS DALLOWAY : hm(misses),d(allow)ay : apparently a book.
11) FLIMSY : fl(i,ms)y : ie manuscript.
12) CABOODLE : cab,oodle-
15) MARATHONER : Marat,honer : the Jean-Paul variety.
16) CLEO : c,Leo
18) SMUT : ---------s,mut-
19) see 24dn
21) EYELINER : eye,liner
22) SUNDEW : ------s,hm(undue)
25,12dn) GETS THE COLD SHOULDER : ddef : bit bland.
27) see 26dn
28,6dn) ROCKY BALBOA : rocky,(Lab<),boa
29) ASSUREDLY : (suds,early)* : apparently a single sud is not a word.

DOWN
1) WOOLF : hm(wolf) : ie eat quickly.
2) SCENIC ROUTE : (countries)* <> c----e
3) CAMPSITE : Campsi(---t)e : Southerners will just have to learn about the wonderful suburb of Campsie . . .
4) APSE : -e-s- p-a- <
5) KOALA BEARS : ko(a)la,bears : which they are not.
6) see 28ac
7) HOW : how- : ie howl. The other one needing time.
8) ANY SECOND : (anon,yes,c-d-) : not sure how this makes sense. Seems tortuous.
13) DILAPIDATED : d(I,lap,ID)ated
14) LOPE DE VEGA : loped,eve,ga/---/---- : yeah, a writer apparently.
15) MESSENGER : mess,(green)*
17) see 25ac
20) FILTHY : lif- <,thy : ie life.
23) WACKY : wa(c-k-)y
24,19ac) GOES PEAR-SHAPED : ddef : 'hippy' as in wide hips.
26,27ac) TIC TAC : tic,(ACT)*

There you go. No surprises. No dramas. 6/10.

9a I will probably not be alone in having been sidetracked here by the idea that "fancy"= ORNATE, then trying fruitlessly to work out how "spot" could equate to NAT.

8d I interpreted ""turning up anon" - or, at least, the "anon" component - as perhaps also intended to provide a definition of ANY SECOND.

9ac, yes, that was my thinking before the break but it dawned afterward.

4 Is 'sporadic' the right word to use given the regularity needed to extract the answer?
