DA 23/11/18

Post by zinzan » Fri Nov 23, 2018 10:31 am

I wondered when I’d get time to go through this but a 90 minute delay at the airport has taken care of that. Yesterday it was dust and wind, today just gusty conditions affecting flights.
Today’s puzzle wasn’t too bad but I have one or two quibbles.

ACROSS
1) STOPLIGHT : s(top)light : more an example of a top.
6) STREW : st-re,w : with=w is always easy to miss. Setters love it.
9) ODD : nup, don’t know why.
10) KING’S CANYON : (snacking)*,yon : ‘when reaching’ seems vague.
11) PARAMOUNT : p(a,ram,-o——-)unt
12) PEP UP : PE,pup : ‘needing’ also vague.
14) CORRAL : cor,r-a-l-
15) ABEYANCE : a,Bey(o/a)nce : not too bad.
17) TOURISTY : to(-urist)y
19) NANTES : nan,set<
22) KUDOS : (sudok-)*
23) ROUND TRIP : round,trip : a visit to the bar is a round.
25) LILLIPUTIAN : (initial,pull)* : don’t like the definition. Even DA doesn’t like it.
27) GEL : leg<
28) SHORE : hm(sure)
29) PISCO SOUR : p(is,cos)our : everyone’s newly learnt drink.

DOWN
1) STOOP : -s to op—
2) ORDER AROUND : -ord-,-er-,-ar-,-ound-
3) LAKEMBA : (blake)*,a <>m : I can justify it but I don’t want to justify it by justifying it.
4) GANG UP : ga(gun)*p
5) TEST TUBE : tee <> butt’s<
6) SHARPLY : shar-,ply
7) RAY : ddef
8) WINE PRESS : hm(whine),press
13) PINOT GRIGIO : PI,(got,origin)*
14) CATSKILLS : ddef : bit humorous at least.
16) STAR JUMP : star,jump : jump a victim is to mug.
18) INSPIRE : -i-n-s-e- <> rip<
20) ADD ONTO : AD,don’t,o : ‘access’? Isn’t it more ‘add on to’?
21) BURIES : hm(berries)
24) POLAR : hm(poler)
26) LOO : loo-

Some of the connector words between devices and/or definition were a bit vague and often distracting. I think sometimes that DA allows some loose clueing because, well, he’s DA. It all could be tidier.
4/10.

Being in bad light at the airport, I read XI as XL. Much easier when XI.
