DA 21/12/18

Post by zinzan » Fri Dec 21, 2018 1:05 pm

Same thing as last week. Had work all morning so had to hope it wasn't a stinker when I got to it. It wasn't.
There were a few look-ups at 7- and 8dn but everything else was pretty straightforward.

ACROSS
1) BIGOTED : bi(p/got)ed : almost didn't need the sec-inds.
5) RALLIED : ddef : a good, deceptive ddef at that.
9) SHE : -she- : ie usher. Easy. I'll come back to this one.
10) WARTS AND ALL : war,t(sandal)l : not a bad clue but in this clue to 'wear' something is 'on the inside' whereas the 'jacket' in 9ac is clearly outside. I don't mind the wearing allusion but it's gotta be consistent. And I don't think the 'inside' is correct.
11) LONGREACH : ddef : all Qantas 747-400s have Longreach emblazoned on them to play on their extended range and its place in Qantas history. I like it.
12) THONG : ---th on G---
13) LLOYD : inits
14) COME CLEAN : (conceal)* <>me : not bad.
16) MANICURES : (ures)* : ie 'manic' URES gives 'sure'.
18) NICHE : (Chine--)* : deficient indeed.
19) LOYAL : (a,LLoy-)* : today's crappiest clue. There was no pay off in linking it this way.
21) GASTROPUB : (top,grub,as)* : a clue construction I've seen a few times in UK puzzles.
24) GALLIMAUFREY : gall,I'm,au,fry : sort of amusing (unless you're a fish fan).
25) FAB : F/A/B : music.
26) TEST OUT : t-e,stout
27) REVERSE : ddef : ie re(about) verse = poetic

DOWN
1) BASIL : bails with S moved : not too foul.
2) GREENHORN : green,horn : bit blah.
3) TOWERED : to,w-----e,red : not sure why the ?. Other clues need one much more, usually.
4) DERMA : der,ma-
5) REST HOMES : (thermoses)* : nice.
6) LUNATIC : lun(at,I)c-
7,17) ITALO CALVINO : -I-t- a-,local,vino : never heard of him/her.
8) DILIGENCE : ddef : due diligence needed. Never heard of the stagecoach type.
13) LIMELIGHT : (l,eight,mil-)* : slightly strained.
14) CARY GRANT : hm(carry),grant : if only the women of the time knew . . .
15) EXCEPT FOR : (force,pet)* <> --x-- : 'vets' is an anagram indicator ? Eh . . ?
17) see 7dn
18) NUREYEV : (eye,run)<,------v--
20) YELPS : --ye--,LPs
22) SAFER : wafer with a different starting letter
23) BIBLE : b(i,B)le- : I like the definition even in the 'combined' form. It had to be so.

I think there were more positives than negatives. Nothing was very hard and some nice wordplay exists, so . . . 7/10.
We'll see how testing the post-Xmas puzzle is.
Enjoy your time off.

10a Agree with zinzan: I would have said that DA himself habitually uses "wear" as an instruction to place something on the outsides.

16a Both "such" and the ? seem redundant.

14d The homophone seems inaccurate to me: we don't pronounce CARY like "carry".
