DA 02/03/18

Post by zinzan » Fri Mar 02, 2018 11:24 am

I did this a bit earlier this morning and I don't recall being especially displeased or excited, so I guess it'll be a 5/10 . . . maybe.

ACROSS
1) IN SYNC : hm(inn sink)
5) DECLAIM : d(ecla-)im : brilliance=eclat
10) see 11ac
11,10) PEDRO ALMODOVAR : (a,dvd, poor, morale)* : not a very good surface, 'gaining poor morale' ? Pedro directed my favourite of the Harry Potter series - Prisoner of Azkaban.
12,3dn,25dn) YADA YADA YADA : a day < 3 times : so 3 days is 72 hours. A decent clue.
13) PRECOCIOUS : pre(co)cious
16) UNCLOTHED : (couldnt,he)* : as in The Emperor's New Clothes, which weren't.
17) BONZA : bo(NZ)a : I didn't check it but I assume it's an apple.
18) TULIP : t.u.l.i.p.
20) REFINANCE : ref,in,--ance : opportunity=chance minus CH.
22) NEW ORLEANS : (owner)*,leans : who spent time anagramming 'owner lists' ? Everyone ?
23) SPAM : spa,m---
26,5dn) LOUIS D'OR : (our,solid)* : never heard of it.
27) ALABASTER : a,lab,aster : Labrador
28) DETENTE : d-e-(tent)e-
29) TEABAG : ---------t,E,A,B,A,G

DOWN
2) NOMADIC : (com-dian)*
3) see 12ac
4) COVER CHARGE : cover,charge
5) see 26ac
6) COPACABANA : cop,a,cabana : cabana seems to be one spelling of a sausage type.
7) AND SO ON : 'and,soon : 'making' does what ?
8) MOONSCAPE : mo,(son)*,cape
9) MARY : m(--at--)y : if you strangle it enough, you can imagine 'my' possessing 'ar' as in 'possessed value, a gold coin' or some such, implying 'possessed by'.
14) CO-DEFENDANT : (of,decadent)* + ----n
15) COMPARISON : com-,Paris,o--n
16) UNTANGLED : -unt,angled
19) LAWSUIT : Sp(saw loot) : neat clue.
21) NAPHTHA : Na(p---h)tha-
24) MYRA : my,--ra-- : the little cleverness for the day. The same clue as 9dn but 'possessed' is now a connector between definition and wordplay.
25) see 12ac
27) AXE : exa- < : i,e, exam.

Maybe I'll go 5.5/10. A variety of clue types (which DA is usually exemplary for) and some nice touches.

24d Zinzan: I don't understand your explanation. The wording of 24d is identical to that of 9d so "heart of hearts" is still AR, not RA. And MARY still fits the intersecting letters. It is true that MYRA is also a girl's name that could alternatively fit here but I don't see how the wordplay would generate it.

re 9 and 24: agree with Robespierre. Zinzan's tortuous explanation for 9 leaves me convinced both are dodgy clues.

Yep, it does appear faulty. My bad.
MYRA is the published answer. Unless 'possessed' is meant to be an anagram indicator, it doesn't do the job.

We may never find out (unless DA has tweeted or something).
