Post by zinzan » Fri Jun 01, 2018 10:18 am

Back to normal operations this week. A few devious definitions and one I don't understand.

ACROSS
1) SMOOTH : s---,moo,--th-- : not a bad start
5) ACUITY : (au--acity)* : the surface is a bit weird.
10) LANTERN : not really sure how it works . . .
11,14) PRIVATE HOSPITAL : (happiest,or,vital)* : sort of okay
12) INFANTILE : in f(ant)ile
13) see 26dn
14) see 11ac
16) BIG CAT : (a,bit)*<>g----c : Tiger returns !
19) LAO-TSE : (stole,a)* : is 'glance' an anagram indicator ?!
20) BUNGALOW : bung,al-ow
23) CLOUD : ddef
25) THE MATRIX : them,a,hm(tricks) : Neo was the main character of the movie.
27) EMBROIL : li(orb)me <
28) MARSDEN : mars,den : Google says YA is 'young adult' . . . whatever.
29) MEASLY : ddef
30) NAPLES : nap les- : a toddler without their nap, briefly.

DOWN
2) MANIFESTO : (of,inmates)*
3) see 26dn
4,19) HANNIBAL LECTER : h(an,bin<)al-,lecter- : 'well'='hale'
5) APPLES : -ap(p)les : is 'pass' = P ?
6) UTILISING : (linguisti--)*
7) TOAST : ddef : you're finished, you're toast.
8) SLEIGH : hm(slay)
9) BEREFT : bere(f---------)t
15) INSIDIOUS : (is,in)*,-dious : I think the 'lying low' means 'hidden' rather than the O moving down, which would not work.
17) COLERIDGE : Cole,ridge
18) SUPERMAN : crypdef : 'largesse, we hear'=large S'. Not too bad a clue.
19) see 4dn
21) WAXING : wag <> nix<
22) AT PLAY : ------y alp ta---- <
24) OMBRE : -ombre
26,13ac,3dn) A DROP IN THE OCEAN : ddef

Apart from 10ac, nothing too nasty here. 5/10

10 Equally puzzled.
19 Chambers gives glance = 'to deflect'. Is deflect an anagrind?
25 Definitely needs a question mark as DA really means Neo classic, not the compound version. Also, outspoken is not a homophone indicator; the addition of a question mark would make it barely acceptable.

Well done Dr Bob. As with 25 another example where DA does not play fair by using a compound word when separate words are called for. And no question mark used to indicate some verbal hanky-panky. In addition, seen from behind = n would be better as seen at the back. In either case still not the greatest clue.
